    WOOD vs. SYNTHETIC

    Sunday, February 24, 2008, 10:53 PM [General]

I'm helping a high school student who is writing a paper on wood vs. synthetic.  He needs some additional viewpoints.  So, which do you prefer and why?

I like wood.  I guess I'm just old fashioned and traditional.  I also like how it plays differently from lane to lane.  Each lane develops "character" with age and wear.  That's my take on it.  What's yours?

With wood lanes I find that the "carrydown" effect is less compared to synthetic...I find the shot more consistent with wood. With synthetic,I find that conditions can change rapidly and you need to stay on top of it(frequent adjustments)in order to score.

I was taught to bowl on synthetic lanes. I enjoy it. With the heavy oil not soaking into the lane, the shot stays consistent most of the day. Unless you're using a lot of revs and playing a steep angle. High revers(Crankers), can push the oil pretty quickly. But with the shot I have, stand center and straight up the 2nd arrow(rightside), it stays consistent. For league play and tournament play. I frequently shoot in tournaments and league there weekly.
I've noticed on wood lanes, as the day progresses, the shot changes drasticly. Causing many changes and possibly a ball change.
I do like to bowl on either. But, all in all, I prefer a heavy oiled synthetic shot.

    Okay....here goes!

Since wood is by definition a porous material, oil will soak into it much faster than on a synthetic surface. I have found that fresh oil on wood breaks down very quickly...while I may start out with a heavy oil ball on wood, I'll usually switch to a dry lane ball by the middle of the second game in a three game block. Moving in to find fresh oil only helps slightly since the same effect takes place the more a particular line is used, thus I'll prefer to change balls rather than change my line.
